Global ETF Summary
ETF AUM is expected to exceed US$2 trillion in 2011.The forecast that ETF AUM will exceed USD 2 trillion in 2011 is based on a number of factors driving the growth such as;
1) continuing increase in the number of institutional and retail investors who use ETFs and view them as useful tools,
2) funds making larger allocations to ETFs based on recent regulatory changes in the US and Europe,
3) the expansion in indices and the number and types of equity, fixed income, commodity and other indices covered,
4) development and growth of investment styles that employ products like ETFs that deliver beta
5) many exchanges plan to launch new ETF trading segments and 6) the expectation that there will be a number of new issuers/managers of ETFs.
Worldwide, there were 596 ETFs with 821 listings, assets of US$487.1 billion, managed by 64 managers on 36 exchanges at the end of the first half of 2006.
The US has the largest number of products and AUM; 275 ETFs and US$344.4 billion, followed by Europe with 216 ETFs and US$71.3 billion and Japan with 13 ETFs and US$39.5 billion.> The Number of ETFs has increased in the first half of 2006.
At the end of H1 2006, 136 ETFs have been launched which is more than the 119 launched in all of 2005. WisdomTree has listed 20 new fundamentally weighted ETFs in the US on June 16th, while ProShares finally saw eight of their twelve leveraged products launched on June 21st. There are plans to launch a further 191 ETFs: 68 in Europe, 98 in the US and 25 in the rest of the world, while 1 ETF in Korea and 4 ETFs in Canada have been de-listed in 2006.
Assets Under Management (AUM) have increased.
Worldwide ETF AUM increased by 16.7% YTD, which is greater than the 4.9% rise in the MSCI World benchmark in USD terms. Europe listed ETF AUM increased by 29.9%, ETFs in the US increased by 13.2% and ETFs in Japan increased by 24.5% compared to the MSCI Europe Index (+19.9%), MSCI US (+1.6%) and MSCI Japan (-1.9%) in USD terms.
Worldwide average trading volumes have increased.
Year to date, the worldwide average daily trading volumes in US dollar have increased by 108.7% to US$34.3 billion from US$16.4 billion at year end 2005.
